Dear Friends Old and New,
Thanksgiving has come and gone. And a peaceable, congenial, restful one it was, even in these trying times. Now the Advent season is upon us, the time of the year when many of us prepare, we wait, we pray, we hope the story of the Christ child will be told as it has for well over 2000 years. We do so with the realization that Western Civilization itself owes its very existence to this history, this story, this compelling myth of our own existence. Yes, it is a mysterious one, as it should be, it is one the essence of which is both in and beyond our understanding, don't you find this to be true? The whole idea that a chaste woman is selected from all of humankind to become miraculously pregnant with the "Son of Man," is a story over the top. "Absurd," my mother used to exclaim, herself a very devout, Christian woman in every sense. In the absurdity is both the appeal and the skepticism, the certainty and the doubt, the answer and the question. Is not Faith rooted in the entirety of the story? If "logic," is what you seek, or "science" or any sort of human-focused "proof," you will not find it here. In my head, the whole proposition moves even more so to the center of life, even as these years fly by. So here on the cusp of Advent, we begin preparation for the Christmas Season.
Biblical Prints: John 13:34: With Thanksgiving behind us (itself comprised of a history based on the desire for repentance and of fasting, notions quite apart from the popular drive to crash the supermarket in order to buy Turkeys, vegetables and cranberry sauce, to say nothing of wine and assorted alcohols) we reflect upon the most important exercise at the root of our Democratic Republic, of our still testy experiment-- our recent mid-term elections. As this is written, there are still votes that, preposterously, have not been counted, believe it or not. Further, I understand 70%+ of all elections delayed across the country (for reasons having to do with "signatures," "drop boxes" and "mail-in ballots) result in wins for the Democratic left-- how convenient. Contrived "confusion" around our elections, not surprisingly comes at a time when organized "Religion" continues to be trashed by the very same forces, the predictably data-driven, secular Left, possessed by the desire to make itself the center of power, law and authority up and down this society, working overtime to obliterate any idea or set of ideas that competes with its manufactured orthodoxy. Consequently, I find these faith prints even more timely and inspiring and am happy to make them available. I can tell you, to see these images hanging in offices and rooms of friends is a special treat that warms my heart.
